175th Anniversary Moment - Dispensation

From the first book of minutes of Washington Chapter No. 2, R. A. M.:

To all whom it may concern,

Greeting

Whereas a petition of sundry Royal Arch Masons in the State of Texas, praying that a dispensation may be granted them to open and hold a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, and Lodges of the appendant orders, at the City of Houston in the County of Harris and the State aforesaid, has been presented to me for consideration, ~ And whereas it appears to me that the prayers of the petitioners ought to be granted . . . . . .

Now know ye, that I, Joseph H. Stapleton, Deputy General Grand High Priest of the General Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the United States, by virtue in the power in me vested, Do by these presents, grant this, my dispensation, to E. B. Nichols, Nelson T. Davis, Robert Brewster, A. M. Gentry, Wm. G. Evans, R. M. DeChene, George Henry, E. A. Stephens, J. A. Southmayd, John H. Brown, J. N. Reed, and W. H. King, the petitioners aforesaid, and to their associates and successors; and empower them to open and hold a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and Lodges of the appendant orders, at the place aforesaid, to be called and distinguished by the name of Washington R. A. Chapter, No. 2; and in each of the several orders to the respective degrees thereof, upon such person or persons, possessing the requisite qualifications as they may think proper.

And I do by these presents, appoint Companion E. B. Nichols as High Priest, Nelson T. Davis as King, and Robert Brewster as Scribe, with continuance of the said powers and privileges, to them and their successors in office and members in said Chapter until the second Tuesday of September, in the Year of our Lord, Eighteen Hundred and Fifty, and no longer.  Provided nevertheless, that the said officers and members of the said Chapter pay due respect to our General Grand Chapter, and to the constitution and edicts, and in no way remove the ancient Landmarks of our order, otherwise this dispensation and all things therein contained to be void and of no effect.

Given under my hand and seal, at the City of

Baltimore, the fifth day of May, in the year of

Our Lord, eighteen hundred and forty-eight.

Jos. H. Stapleton
